Both XML and HTML are file formats, so what differs below is how each one chooses to represent a value.
| Property | in XML | in HTML |
|---|---|---|
| identifiers | Attribute values in quotes; entities (& < >) for ... | Attribute values in quotes; entities for reserved characters |
| dates | Text (xs:date / xs:dateTime when an XSD is in play) | Whatever text was rendered |
| binary | base64Binary / hexBinary inside text | data: URIs inside src attributes |
| encoding | Declared in the XML declaration | Declared in a meta charset tag or the HTTP header |
| typing | None in the markup itself | None |
| shape | Arbitrary tree | Free form; tables are row/column structures inside markup |
| ceiling | Whole document is usually parsed into memory | No formal limit |
