Dialect differences
Both HTML and XML are file formats, so what differs below is how each one chooses to represent a value.
| Property | in HTML | in XML |
|---|---|---|
| identifiers | Attribute values in quotes; entities for reserved characters | Attribute values in quotes; entities (& < >) for ... |
| dates | Whatever text was rendered | Text (xs:date / xs:dateTime when an XSD is in play) |
| binary | data: URIs inside src attributes | base64Binary / hexBinary inside text |
| encoding | Declared in a meta charset tag or the HTTP header | Declared in the XML declaration |
| typing | None | None in the markup itself |
| shape | Free form; tables are row/column structures inside markup | Arbitrary tree |
| ceiling | No formal limit | Whole document is usually parsed into memory |
