October 6, 2026 — Withdata Software announces LevelDataStudio 1.6, a native desktop browser and editor for LevelDB. This release is a complete rebuild: the WebView is gone, replaced by a pure-Go native UI that starts in milliseconds and uses a fraction of the memory — while adding a value decoder chain, Chromium Local Storage and IndexedDB support, and read-only opening that does not fight the database lock.

What’s New in LevelDataStudio 1.6
1. Rebuilt on a Native UI — No WebView
Version 1.6 replaces the previous WebView-based interface with a native desktop UI written entirely in Go. There is no WebView2 dependency and nothing extra to install. The new build is dramatically lighter and faster:
- Cold start: ~770 ms (WebView-based builds: 1.7 – 6 s)
- Warm start: ~85 ms (WebView-based builds: ~700 ms)
- Idle memory: ~58 MB (WebView-based builds: ~370 MB)
- WebView dependency: none
2. Understand Chromium Local Storage and IndexedDB
Chrome and Electron apps store data in LevelDB, but it is hard to read: keys are prefixed with an origin, values carry a version byte, and IndexedDB uses a special idb_cmp1 comparator. LevelDataStudio 1.6 detects this automatically and presents it in a readable form — Local Storage and Session Storage grouped by origin, and IndexedDB parsed into a database → object store → primary key tree. UTF-16LE and UTF-8 values are restored automatically.

3. Read-Only First, and It Won’t Fight the Lock
Opening a database read-only is the default, so you can inspect a LevelDB that a running application is still using without changing the original data. When a write is requested, the database is opened writable only for that operation and reopened read-only afterwards. The comparator is probed automatically, and if a database will not open, LevelDataStudio copies it and tries again.
4. Decode What’s Actually Stored (Value Decoder Chain)
LevelDB values are often encoded or compressed — images stored as base64, configuration gzipped. Version 1.6 adds a decoder chain that unwraps Base64, data-URL, gzip, zlib, snappy, hex and URL encoding step by step, shown as a breadcrumb (Raw › Base64 › gzip) with single-step decode and reset. Values can be viewed as Auto, Text, JSON, HEX or Image (PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP and BMP), and automatic decoding is capped at 32 MB to guard against decompression bombs.
5. Search by Value
Knowing a key is not always enough — sometimes you only have a token, a URL or a fragment of text. Version 1.6 adds search by value: it scans every value in the background and lists the keys whose values match, showing the matching fragment right in the list.
