Video: Export data from PostgreSQL table to XML file in a few clicks
This video shows how to export data from PostgreSQL table to XML file in a few clicks with Withdata DBToFile, or with the free Export PostgreSQL to XML online tool. It covers the postgres table side and the XML side.
Export PostgreSQL to XML: what this does
This walks through exporting a PostgreSQL table or query result to an XML file — useful for feeds, legacy integrations or systems that expect XML. The video above shows the full flow; the notes cover the PostgreSQL-specific parts.
Steps
Open Withdata DBToFile and connect to PostgreSQL (host, port, database, user).
Pick the table, or use Query to export a SELECT result.
Choose XML as the destination format.
Set the output file and click Export.
Save the session if you need to repeat the export on a schedule.
PostgreSQL to XML: details worth knowing
Element names. Each row becomes an element and each column a child element named after the column; rename the columns in the query if the consumer needs different tags.
NULL values. A PostgreSQL NULL is written as an empty element (or omitted, depending on the option) — keep it distinct from an empty string.
Escaping.&, <, > and quotes in text are XML-escaped, so the file stays well-formed.
Rich types.json/jsonb and arrays are written as text (and escaped); bytea has no XML equivalent.
Dates.timestamp/timestamptz are written as ISO-8601 strings, which keeps the time zone offset.
Large tables. XML has to be parsed as a whole, so very large tables are easier to consume when split by date range or row count.
FAQ
Can I control the root element and row tag?
Yes — set the root and row element names in the export options.
Can I export a join or a subset?
Yes; export the result of a query instead of a single table.
Can it run unattended?
Yes; save the session and trigger it from the command line or a scheduled task.
