Type mapping
| Value kind | in HTML | in TSV |
|---|---|---|

| Long text | <td>multi-line text</td> (entities for & <) | unquoted; newlines break the row |
| Date | <td>2026-09-18</td> | 2026-09-18 |
| Datetime | <td>2026-09-18 14:30:00</td> | 2026-09-18 14:30:00 |
| Binary | not representable in a cell | not representable |
| Boolean | <td>true</td> | TRUE / FALSE |
| JSON | <td>{"a":1}</td> (quotes escaped) | the whole JSON value as-is (its own quotes stay) |
Dialect differences
Both HTML and TSV are file formats, so what differs below is how each one chooses to represent a value.
| Property | in HTML | in TSV |
|---|---|---|
| identifiers | Attribute values in quotes; entities for reserved characters | Rarely used, which is exactly why tabs in data break it |
| dates | Whatever text was rendered | Conventional text: 2026-09-18 or 2026-09-18 14:30:00 |
| binary | data: URIs inside src attributes | Not supported - must be encoded |
| separator | Tags, not delimiters | Tab |
| encoding | Declared in a meta charset tag or the HTTP header | No declaration - UTF-8 works only with a BOM |
| typing | None | None - every field is text |
| shape | Free form; tables are row/column structures inside markup | Flat table, optional header row |
