The situation

Something is in a very large file and you have to find it: an order id in a database export, a stack trace in a month of logs, a malformed record somewhere in a 3 GB CSV. You may know the string, you may only know the pattern, or you may know exactly which line number was reported.

A command line tool will find the matching lines, but it prints them without context and gives you nowhere to look around. An editor would give you context, but it cannot open the file.

What you do

  1. Open the file - it appears immediately, whatever its size.
  2. Search with a plain string or a regular expression. Matches are highlighted in the text, and you can step through them.
  3. Or jump straight there: Go To Line for a line number, which is what an error message usually gives you.
  4. Read around the match - the surrounding chunks load as you scroll, and you can pause loading if you only need a small region.

Searching for a string inside a very large log file

The search runs against the file where it is; the whole file is never loaded into memory. Everything is local - the file does not have to be uploaded to a service to be searched.
